About Dr.Young

Jay A. Young, M.D., F.A.C.S

Dr. Jay Young was born, raised, and educated in Madison, Wisconsin. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in 1985 and Medical Degree in 1989 from the prestigious medical school at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. After finishing medical school, he continued his medical training at Louisiana State University Medical Center, where he completed a General Surgical Residency in 1995 and a rigorous Colon and Rectal Fellowship in 1996. It was there he met his future wife, Natalie. They have three sons, all active in scholastic and athletic pursuits. Although he is now a true “Vol” fan, attending many sporting events with his sons, he still remains a loyal “Badger” fan, frequently returning to visit his family and alma mater in Madison, Wisconsin.

Dr. Young is a board certified General Surgeon and board certified Colon and Rectal Surgeon who now specializes in Colon and Rectal Surgery. He came to Knoxville after being invited to join The East Tennessee Colon and Rectal Surgical Associates by his great friend and mentor, Dr. William Acuff, the practice founder. Dr. Young brought Laparoscopic Colon Surgery to ETCRSA, performing their first Laparoscopic Colectomy in 1996. He now performs the great majority of his Colon Resections with laparoscopic minimally invasive techniques, allowing for quicker patient recovery, with much reduced pain and scarring. Additionally, he completed a through training program on the new and innovative da Vinci Robotic System, and performed Knoxville’s first Robotic Colon Resection in 2012!

Dr. Young has extensive experience diagnosing and treating Rectal Cancer, performing his own in-office Rectal Ultrasound examinations to stage the disease in these patients. He is a proponent of Neo-Adjuvant (or Pre-Operative) Chemo-Radiation Therapy for the down staging of locally advanced Rectal Cancer. He brought to Knoxville, and performed the first Colon J-Pouch Anal Anastamosis, for the restoration of bowel continuity following Low Rectal Cancer Resection in 1996. This unique procedure allows for near normal fecal control and storage, following Ultra Low Rectal Resection, eliminating the disabling “Low Anterior Syndrome”, and greatly improving the quality of life for this patient population.

Additionally, he is very interested and experienced in treating patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, such as Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease, for which he routinely performs Total Proctocolectomy and sphincter sparing ultra low Ileal Pouch Anal Anastamosis. This seemingly miraculous procedure affords a near normal life style and bowel function, without a colostomy, to suffering colitis patients with incapacitating diarrhea and incontinence.

Dr. Young is a vigorous advocate of Colorectal Cancer Screening and performs a large volume of Colonoscopies annually, while teaching Colorectal Cancer awareness. His patient outreach for this disease spreads all the way to his rural clinic in Newport.

Dr. Young has a bustling and innovative Anorectal practice as well, diagnosing and treating all medical conditions associated with the anus and rectum. It was his privilege to be chosen to introduce the minimally invasive Stapled (PPH) Hemorrhoidectomy to East Tennessee in 1996. He provided training to many surgeons from surrounding areas and states in the use of this technique. With this procedure he reduced the recovery time from hemorrhoid surgery in his patients to only 4 days!

A significant portion of patients that come to him diagnosed with hemorrhoids, are actually suffering from a different medical problem, anal fistulas, another extremely painful condition. He performs the latest LIFT Procedure for complex anal fistulas, a procedure which avoids sphincter division, thus lessening the risk for fecal incontinence. He has also trained in and avidly uses Fistula Plugs and Advancement Flaps for these complex fistulae.

A recent broadening awareness of Fecal Incontinence has led to Dr Young’s expansion of treatment for this debilitating medical condition. He is now successfully performing Sphincter Reconstruction and implanting the revolutionary Artificial Anal Sphincter Implantation (AMS Neosphincter). Additionally, he has placed the first Interstim Implanted Nerve Stimulator for Fecal Incontinence in Knoxville! A treatment that has shown remarkable improvement in bowel control, even where other therapies have failed. He is also the first Colon and Rectal Surgeon in the Knoxville area to perform Solesta Injection Therapy. This minor office procedure has shown miraculous improvement in both flatus (gas) and fecal control.

Dr. Jay Young is a well-respected and revered surgeon who is uniquely qualified to diagnose, treat, and cure all conditions associated with the Colon and Rectum. He has devoted his life to continuing and improving his training, practice, and knowledge pertaining to this particular area of surgery, where he continues to strive to be a leader in the field of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
